Ritorno a scuola

The continuity and resumption of school activities is one of the main themes during the emergency management.  After the earthquake of April 6, 2009,  the Department of Civil Protection worked hard to allow the return to class of over 17,000 students of the "seismic zone", together with the Ministry of Education, University and Research and all institutions.

The Department worked together with the competent institutions to make to bring the children back to school safely, in the masonry or reinforced concrete institutes, or in the new  Musp, the temporary school modules that replaced the old site for the time necessary to repair or rebuild it.

Each school was subjected to tests of practicability: from the static testing of the buildings, to the tests necessary for health and hygiene certifications, conformity of the systems and fire prevention before the entry of the students.

Safety of schools has key importance, but to face the seismic risk is also essential a broader reflection on the natural risks of our country and, in particular, of the territory where you live.  For this reason, the Department has invested in information and training activities, organizing meetings with parents and teachers, while working with students for a conscious return to class.

The "Scuola sicura" Civil Protection project - carried out in collaboration with the components and structures of the National Service, the Ministry of Education, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the network of Seismic Engineering University Laboratories (ReLuiS), local institutions and municipalities of the seismic zone.  The project started before the reopening of schools with a "transparency operation" on technical-engineering interventions in school buildings and continued with training courses aimed at children to raise their awareness and ability to face the earthquake.

The lessons started with a Civil Protection unit in each school, to answer the children's questions and prepare evacuation tests provided for in the school safety plan. There was also a permanent team of structural engineers - specifically trained for the analysis of school buildings - at school disposal for any requests for verification.

Also, the students of the University of L'Aquila re-started lessons in temporary structures, while the Department in collaboration with the Region and the University,  guaranteed a free transport service for students out from the seismic zone.
