Over the past thousand years, tens of tsunamis - some of which destructive - have been reported along the Italian coasts. Eastern Sicily, Calabria, Puglia and the Eolie archipelago are the most affected coastal areas.
\nThe most destructive tsunamis have occurred in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, where earthquakes with magnitude and frequence much higher than the Mediterranean ones can occur and where water masses are much larger than the ones of a closed and shallow basin such as the Mediterranean Sea.
\nIn this section, we recall the strongest tsunamis of recent history, in Italy and around the world, focusing on the emergencies in which the Civil Protection Department was involved.

Tsunami was heard in the Aeolian Islands, on the coasts of Northern Sicily, Tyrrhenian Calabria and up to the Salerno coast of Campania. It had significant effects along the coasts of Stromboli, where the waves reached their maximum heights. Waves of almost 10 metres have been recorded in the north-eastern part of the island, along Piscità and Ficogrande, where the tsunami caused the flooding of both the coast and the lower parts of Stromboli, causing damage to homes.

The strongest earthquakes in recent history that also caused tsunami occurred in Chile (1960), Alaska (1964), South East Asia (2004) and Japan (2011). There are also historical reports about landslides and volcanic eruptions caused by tsunami.
\nOn May 22, 1960, Chile experienced the most violent earthquake of the 20th century, with a magnitude of 9.5. A tsunami wave followed the event. Earthquake and tidal wave killed about 2,400 people and caused serious damage. On the coast closest to the epicentre (Isla Chiloe) waves up to 25 meters high occurred 10-15 minutes after the earthquake. In Hawaii (Hilo Bay) the tsunami arrived 15 hours later, reaching a height of 11 meters. Six-meter waves reached the coasts of Japan, covering about 10,000 kilometers in 22 hours.
\nOn March 27, 1964, in Alaska, an earthquake of magnitude 9.2 shook an area about 1,600 kilometers long and 300 wide, causing vertical movements of about 2 meters. The ensuing tsunami hit sparsely inhabited areas, causing 160 casualties and major damage in the Kodiak Islands, Vancouver, Hawaii and the states of Washington and California, where the waves reached heights of between two and six meters.
\nOn December 26, 2004, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra resulted in the largest tidal wave in 40 years. No other tsunami in the past has caused so many casualties: more than 280,000. The waves have hit all the states surrounding the Bay of Bengal, also causing damage in Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, South Africa, Australia. The tidal wave has crossed two oceans, Atlantic and Pacific, and has been reported in New Zealand, Antarctica and along the western and eastern coasts of South and North America.
On March 11, 2011, the strongest earthquake ever struck Japan occurred. An earthquake of magnitude 9.0 with epicenter off the Japanese coast produced a vertical shift of the seabed from five to eight meters and caused a giant tidal wave that spread throughout the Pacific Ocean, reaching the coasts of North and South America, from Alaska to Chile, where waves arrived two meters high. On the coast closest to the epicentre, waves up to 40 metres high fell about an hour after the earthquake. The wrong estimate of the height of the waves and the underestimation of the size of the tidal wave have meant that the damage and the number of victims have been many more than expected. In the Sendai area the water penetrated up to ten kilometres inland and in Fukushima the flood caused serious damage to the nuclear power station. Thousands of people within a radius of twenty kilometres of the plant have been evacuated.
\nOn 27 February 2010, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Chile produced a large tidal wave that struck several cities along Chile's southern-central coast and caused minor damage even in California and Japan.
\nIn 1883 the great eruption of the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa in the strait of the Sonda, between the islands of Sumatra and Java, gave rise to at least three waves that claimed more than 36 thousand victims. The waves reached a height of 37 meters and destroyed all the towns and villages along the coasts of the Sonda Strait. \nFin dalle prime ore successive al terremoto il Sistema di protezione civile mette a disposizione i propri uomini e mezzi per intervenire direttamente nelle zone colpite con team specializzati. In un primo momento le autorità giapponesi decidono di accettare le offerte di aiuto provenienti dai Paesi geograficamente più vicini, come Stati Uniti, Nuova Zelanda e Corea del Sud. A tre giorni dal sisma, il 15 marzo, parte per il Giappone il primo team italiano di esperti di valutazione e gestione delle emergenze, composto da funzionari del Dipartimento della Protezione Civile, dei Vigili del Fuoco e dell’Ispra-Istituto superiore per la protezione e la ricerca ambientale. La missione è coordinata dal Dipartimento in collaborazione con il Ministero degli Affari Esteri. Col passare dei giorni a preoccupare maggiormente è il rischio radiologico legato alla situazione della centrale di Fukushima. Il team rimane in Giappone quasi una settimana, concentrando le proprie attività nella zona di Tokyo, in supporto all’Ambasciata italiana. I tecnici effettuano una serie di rilevazioni per verificare i livelli di radioattività dell’aria. Durante la permanenza a Tokyo la squadra italiana rimane in costante contatto con le autorità giapponesi, le squadre europee e il coordinamento delle Nazioni Unite per definire il quadro della situazione e delle esigenze.
\nAlla fine di marzo parte per il Giappone un nuovo gruppo di esperti, coordinato sempre dal Dipartimento. Ai funzionari del Dipartimento, dei Vigili del Fuoco e dell’Ispra si unisce un esperto del Ministero della Salute. Anche stavolta l’attività del team si concentra nell’area metropolitana di Tokyo. On 26 December 2004, at 7.58 local time, an earthquake measuring 9.0 in magnitude on the Richter scale, one of the strongest recorded in the last century, generates a tsunami of frightening dimensions that hits the coastlines of the countries around the Indian Ocean, claiming approximately 300,000 victims.
\nThe epicentre of the earthquake is located off the northwest coast of the island of Sumatra, at a depth of approximately 10 km, caused by the subduction of the Indian plate, sliding in a northeast direction, under the Burma plate. Over the days to follow, seismic activity moves gradually north with numerous aftershocks of maximum magnitude of 7.0. The earthquake causes the seabed above the fault line to rise by several metres, triggering a freak wave that engulfs the island of Sumatra. Travelling at a speed of 6-700 kph, it hits the coast of Thailand in just over one hour and a half, causing death and destruction on the beaches frequented by great numbers of western tourists, and sweeping hundreds of meters inland. The same occurs on the islands of Nicobar and those off the Indian coast. About two hours later, the wave hits the coast of Sri Lanka, wiping out coastal populations, followed by the coast of India. The wave strikes the Maldives, at over 2,000 km west of the epicentre, after approximately three hours, and simultaneously hits the African coasts of Somalia and Kenya in the late morning, having travelled thousands of kilometres.
\nLess than 24 hours after the tsunami, a team from the Department of Civil Protection is in Sri Lanka to provide aid and assistance to the Italian tourists hit by the catastrophe, while other emergency units reach the Maldives and Phuket, in Thailand. Thus begins the work of the Department in Sri Lanka, which follows up the initial emergency operations with an aid program for the tsunami victims including reconstruction work, social assistance and the re-launch of the local economy.
\nThe emergency tsunami Programme, possible thanks also to donations by Italians who took part in the solidarity campaign launched by the Department, carried out 56 reconstruction and development projects between 2004 and 2007:

\nThe donations received at the time came to a total of 50 million euro. With these resources, it has been possible to complete all the activities included in the aid Programme, whose costs and implementation times are reported in a publication that “takes account” of what was done after the tsunami in Sri Lanka until 2007. Two and a half years after the tragedy, all the projects envisaged have been completed and handed over to beneficiaries and local authorities.
\nFurthermore, upon the closure of the general Programme, some funds, interest accrued and new donations were still available. The Guarantors, with the consent of the Donors’ Committee, have put these amounts towards six new projects, carried out until 2010 in Sri Lanka. The Department of Civil Protection has directly handled relations with the those responsible for carrying out in-field interventions. Like before, these new projects have been subject to the system of monitoring and control of reports already tried and tested in the management of the general interventions Programme.
